Who we are
Jaffna Medical Faculty Overseas Alumni (JMFOA- Canada) and JMFOA Foundation are Non-Political and Non-profit organizations formed by Doctors from the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, who live in Canada.
Vision
Our objective is to relieve sickness, preserve and promote good health for the public benefit in Sri Lanka and Canada.
Mission
We are Medical Doctors would like to empower our society by sharing our knowledge and resources through collaboration to develop sustainable, long-lasting strategic plans and action to uplift the health system and the education that needs to achieve our vision
Strategic Development Goals
1. Developing realistic, coordinated, long-lasting strategic plans in Health care.
2. To promote and support local and International Healthcare organizations through advocacy, research, resources and pilot projects.
3. Promote Health by providing Healthcare products and other necessary supplies to help prevent and manage severe threats to Health.
4. To relieve poverty by providing food and other necessities of life to individuals and families in need.
5. Provide training, workshops, and seminars on issues relating to physical and mental health and medicine to students and the general public.
6. To advance education by providing books, equipment, and educational aids to needy students attending schools and Universities.
7. Provide publicly available scholarships, bursaries, and other forms of financial assistance to students for post-secondary education.
Faculty of Medicine University of Jaffna
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Jaffna was established on the 7th of August 1978. It was ceremonially opened on the 8th of October 1978. The Provincial Hospital Jaffna was declared as the Teaching Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine at the same time.
Prof. A. A. Hoover was the founder Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Prof. A. A. Hoover with his fourty years of University teaching experience was an asset to the Faculty in its formative years. Prof. R. Kanagasuntheram, an internationally renowned Professor of Anatomy was the second Dean of the Faculty. He was responsible for getting endowment for Chairs in Orthopaedic Surgery and Oncology. Prof. C. Sivagnanasundram, Professor of Community Medicine, WHO Consultant, Novelist and Social worker became the third Dean.
Universtiy of Jaffna
The establishment of a full-fledged University in Jaffna had been a long-standing aspiration of the people of Jaffna. This was fulfilled when an order made by the Honourable Minister of Education established a campus of the University of Sri Lanka in 1974. The campus became an independent and autonomous University bearing the name University of Jaffna on January 1, 1979.
JMFOA
The Jaffna Medical Faculty Overseas Alumni (JMFOA) is an organization of medical professionals who have graduated from the Jaffna Medical Faculty in Sri Lanka and are currently living and practicing medicine overseas.
The organization was established in 2002 to foster a strong network of Jaffna Medical Faculty graduates worldwide, promote their professional development, and support healthcare initiatives in Sri Lanka.
JMFOA is a registered non-profit organization in the United States and has active chapters in several countries, including Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The organization's members actively organize continuing medical education events, support medical research, and provide mentorship to medical students and young doctors.
In addition to their professional work, JMFOA members also engage in charitable initiatives to support healthcare services in Sri Lanka. The organization has funded and supported several healthcare projects, including providing medical equipment to hospitals and clinics, sponsoring medical camps, and supporting scholarships for medical students.
JMFOA serves as a platform for Jaffna Medical Faculty alumni to connect, collaborate, and contribute to advancing healthcare in Sri Lanka and beyond.
JMFOA- Canada
Jaffna Medical Faculty Overseas Alumni and JMFOA Foundation are Non-Political and Non-Profit organizations. JMFOA-Canada is founded by the graduates of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, Srilanka. We formed JMFOA-Canada with the intention of helping our Medical Faculty, hospitals, their staff, and people back home and in Canada.
